Who are we?NAG is a group of local enthusiasts engaged in studying the history and archaeology of the district around our village. Navenby lies about 10 miles south of Lincoln on the old Roman road called Ermine Street, known locally as High Dyke. Lincoln was a major Roman settlement and the word 'Lincoln' derives from the Roman name for the city which was Lindum Colonia - the city by the pool. Evidence suggests that Navenby was a significant staging point along Ermine Street during Roman times at a half a day's march from Lincoln. Remains of Bronze Age and earlier settlements have also been uncovered.
NAG was formed in 2000Building work for new housing in the village uncovered significant archaeological remains dating from Roman and pre-Roman times. A large area of land was set aside as a preservation area and Open Space for communal use. A group of volunteers organized NAG to take care of the space and under a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, placed notice boards describing the finds within the field. You can read more about the Open Space on the
