Updated: Tuesday 30th June 2009
The
Summer Dig will enter its third week on Monday. A substantial road, building foundations and Roman graves have been uncovered with a multitude of pottery and coin finds. To accomodate the large number of visitors we will now offer
tours of the site each day, including weekends, at 11.00am and 3.30pm.
It is not too late if you live locally and would like to volunteer. All we ask is that you be willing to work a few hours in a day over several days so that the initial training you will receive can be used effectively. You can either excavate or help to wash and sort the pottery finds. You don't need to be there every day or all day. To sign-up either visit the site or call 811 745 for more information.

Summer DigPictures from Viking Day 7th JuneThanks to all NAG members who volunteered their time and effort to organise another annual event. The morning provided some good entertainment and a good turn-out of an estimated 300-350 visitors. Sadly, the afternoon brought pouring rain and we abandoned the event at 1pm with thunder in the air.
I still managed to get some good pictures which you can see in navenby.net

Do We Celebrate the Romans leaving Britain?Work is underway to do just that with digs, lectures and exhibitions.

Navenby ExcavationThe details of the
Summer Dig project organized by NDC Group Ltd. and Preconstruct Archaeology have now been announced. This will involve uncovering the supposed Roman Shrine on the land west of High Dyke for further study and also investigating the track of the Jurassic Way that predated Ermine Street. NAG members will support Preconstruct but a key objective of the project is to involve much wider public participation and local schools in the excavation which will take place over 28 days during summer. About 15 - 20 volunteers will be needed each day working under the supervision of the professional archaeology team. For more background and details of public participation read the
Project Announcement.
